(L-R) Bill Ohle (Library Trustee), Mae Sharman (Library Board President), Sally Collins (Library Board Vice-President), Frank Sykes (Library Director)

Mary (Mae) Sharman was presented the Ludlum-Holroyd Service Award on October 13 at the Pioneer Library System Annual Meeting in Canandaigua. The award is given annually in recognition of significant contributions to Livingston County Libraries.

Mae Sharman has served on the Livonia Library Board since 1983 and has served as Board President since 2002. She is involved in so many aspects of the library it would be hard to name them all, including budgeting, policy development, maintenance, fundraising.

When the Friends Group reorganized several years ago, Mae volunteered to be on the steering committee and now serves as co-chairperson. She tirelessly helps with projects and has helped raise funds to benefit the library. Because of her hard work and dedication, the library has been able to sponsor programming for seniors and children, purchase computers, revamp the children’s section, and update the kitchen.

Mae has pride in the library not only as a trustee but as a patron as well. “If something needs to be done at the library, Mae is right there volunteering” says Frank Sykes, Director of the Livonia Public Library.  “She is consistently devoted to the Livonia Public Library, its patrons, and the community”.   Examples include putting up the new library sign that she helped raise funds for; decorating the outside of the library building for various holidays; cleaning up the library grounds after severe weather; putting out the flags on holidays; moving books in the library when new shelving was recently installed.

Mae Sharman and her husband Michael, a retired teacher at Livonia Central School have resided in Livonia for over 33 years. They raised their two sons Michael and Matthew here and have two young grandchildren, Ella and Jack.
